15.14: Agent Query Trenches

Your Hosts: Brandon, Mary Robinette, Dan, and Howard

The title of this episode comes to us from listener questions along the lines of “what do you do when you’re ‘in the trenches’ querying agents?” Our answers, predictably, have almost nothing to do with actual trenches.

Credits: This episode was recorded by Joseph Meacham, and mastered by Alex Jackson

  1. I’ve had the same experience as Mary Robinette: learning how to write a query has helped me figure out some flaws in the book itself, because boiling down the plot to these few lines forced me to ask questions I’d lost sight of in outlining and writing the first draft. Since then, I’ve been using the query also as a part of the outlining process.

  2. Queries from the trenches about queries in the trenches? Yes, the frantic foursome, Brandon, Mary Robinette, Dan, and Howard, turned their attention to staying cool when queries (and rejections, and bad reviews, and all that!) fill your trench. Emotional survival… keep writing! Be honest. Try a different route. Before you start, decide when to quit? Lost in the trenches? Get out a shovel, and dig… or read the transcript, available now in the archives.
