13.20: Fear and Writing, with Emma Newman

Your Hosts: Dan, Mary, Aliette, and Howard, with special guest Emma Newman

Emma Newman, author, audio book narrator, and podcaster, joined us on the Baltic sea for WXR 2017, where, six days after a brilliant presentation on overcoming fear, she recorded a session with us on the same topic. The class was just that good.

Credits: This episode was recorded by Bert Grimm, and was mastered by Alex Jackson

  1. Sorry this one’s late. That’s on me. I thought I’d correctly scheduled it to post (I hadn’t) and then I forgot to schedule the reminder that forces me to check to see if I’d correctly scheduled the post.

If it’s any consolation, the episode is worth waiting for. Even though you shouldn’t have had to wait.

  2. I will admit that I was wondering where the cast was last night. Definitely worth waiting for! This was an important episode. Thank you. I especially appreciated Emma and Mary’s transparency and candor.

  3. Is there any chance the full text from Emma’s class might be made available at some point in the future (for free or for purchase)? Thank you so much for tackling this important topic.

  4. Thank u guys for this episode!! Treating mental illness in such a positive way was amazing to hear, and genuinely helpful tips. Yes! U go guys

  5. Hello
Thank you for the great episode as always
This is one topic i can relate to very well.
I am maybe below amateur writer i mean i just have written about some pieces for myself.
And i can relatebto Emma’s word very very well.
I just want to write something complet but a get these chill and and drop write even if i have an idea.
Part of it i relized was being afraid to so it wrong: i am from Tunisia so basically not a native english speaking person wich when is start thinking that way i stop midway and say “yeah i won’t work after all”. Also when i think about how i got into reading and decided to write was after reading Brandon’s works that i love so much and that unconsciously i realize i want to be like this, then again i’d say “maybe aiming at auch hight standards like Brandon’s is too much..” And so on.
Finally maybe i have to find a way to overcome this fear of mine and write because i do really love to end up with a full piece work of my own.
I feel like i am confessing.
Thank you again for this episode it helped me realize so many things.

  6. On the Writing Excuses retreat, Dan, Mary, Aliette, and Howard sat down with Emma Newman to talk about the fears that we let keep us from writing. Why do we procrastinate? Well, it must be time to clean the house, or get a snack, or read some Twitter… Plenty of discussion about the fears that we have, and some ways to talk to them, trick them, and even give the inner toddler a bowl of ice cream just as soon as you finish this one scene… So go read all about it in the transcript, available now in the archives or over here

With apologies if I mixed up the labeling on Aliette and Emma anywhere. Sometimes it’s hard to identify the speakers.
