11.07: The Convention Survival Kit, with Gail Carriger

Gail Carriger joined us at WorldCon in Spokane, Washington, to talk about her Convention Survival Kit, which is full of things most of us wish we’d known to bring to conventions back when we first started attending them.

Pronunciation note: Brandon uses the soft “g” when saying Gail’s surname, but it’s actually Carriger with a hard “g.”

Liner note: Gail’s convention tips and packing list can be found here. The page is pretty comprehensive, and is worth bookmarking and committing to memory.

  1. Hello,

I’d really love to be able to listen to some of the previous content on player fm, even if you uploaded a few more seasons to it? I’m not sure if that’s possible but, say, seasons 5 – 8? Thought i’d check, you could send me an email with another way to listen by app (not a browser) if there is one, and you had the inclination.

  2. Why’d you guys change the color scheme? I like it cause blue is my favorite color but it’s weird because the site’s been orange for years.

    1. The site was black-and-white for years, and was maroon and gold from January 1st through February 15th. We changed to blue because the 2016 Out of Excuses cruise pin will use these colors.

Going forward we’ll probably change the colors annually, with maybe a few other changes for special occasions.

  3. I haven’t listened to this one yet (I’m listening in order and still is season 6), but I love the new color scheme. I wasn’t a big fan of the red/orange, but I love the blue.

  4. The pronunciation note made me laugh. Brandon’s mispronunciations always make me smile. Petition for a “Fun Fact” on each episode such as “Howard was eating popcorn throughout this entire episode, which is why you don’t hear too much of him this time.” ;P
    Great episode!

  5. You mentioned the writer’s newsletter as the best way to stay in touch with fans. Could you do a podcast on how to write an effective newsletter? I don’t remember hearing you talk about it before.
Thanks for all you do – very helpful!
